Beauty and Desirability

As I prepare for a big work meeting, I have less time to ponder the mysteries of life.  Even so, I try to keep up with my regular reading, and so I offer you this article by Leah Libresco on “Making a Home for the Homely in Romance.”

Essentially she contends that the beloved in many a story is made enormously attractive as a lazy way of explaining why the lover is attracted to her.  It also makes both of them shallow characters.  However, “when shows go beyond the cheap signals of desirability, it’s easier for the audience to respect and admire the lover as well as the beloved.”

Sometimes other people say things how I wished I’d thought to say them.
