Men Who Get It

In the light of tragedy, a couple of good pieces on privilege have shown up.  These pieces strike me all the more because they are written by males.  The general perspective is that, while most men are not jerks/creepy/violent, violence against women stems from certain manifestations of male privilege, and so to change things, men must change.

The first discusses hashtags #notallmen and #yesallwomen and mostly dwells on the fact that we never know what it is like to experience life as the other gender.  I also recommend, as supplemental reading, this piece about being elevators, potential assault, and feminism in the atheist community.  (The author of the first piece links to this one.)

The second discusses nerd culture and the objectification of women as objects.  The author kind of rags on one of my favorite TV shows, The Big Bang Theory, but I kind of agree with him.  Actually, I think the gender problems of said show are deeper than he discusses, but that is a different tangent.
